Objectives
- To introduce students to the theory and practice of experiential learning through the process of designing a plan of action in which they document their learning from experience, develop learning objectives with their faculty advisors and field supervisors, and competently perform, engage in, and master coursework, fieldwork, and independent city living
- To help students develop knowledge in fields of work
- To encourage students to examine stereotypes and question assumptions about differences in age, class, ethnicity, religion, race, sex, gender, culture, sexuality, etc., as well as to help students interact with people who they perceive as having different values and lifestyles
- To explore with students various career options and to help them develop strategies and skills for professional growth
- To guide students in seeking knowledge that is necessary for them to become more informed participants in the social and political processes by which cities, states, and the nation are governed
- To help students understand how a city is a site of learning, a resource in developing knowledge and skills, and a space that presents opportunities to examine one’s values and attitudes
- To assist students in setting up housing, in managing resources, and in becoming competent in navigating and living in a city
- To demonstrate to students how to generalize and apply knowledge acquired through fieldwork, coursework, and city living, so that they can integrate this knowledge into their day-to-day lives
