Career Development
The ability to gain career insight is another reason to spend a semester in Philadelphia.
Overview –Our alumni have consistently told us that spending a semester in Philadelphia provided them with valuable career insight. While it often means different things, gaining career insight can be summed up in three general categories: a)going into a specific field of work, b)applying to graduate school, law school or medical school or c)applying to a post-baccalaureate program. This career insight is a direct result of the learning process students are engaged in during their semester in Philadelphia. At The Philadelphia Center, students work closely with TPC’s faculty advisors, who help ensure that each participant has a substantial learning experience during their 32-hour-a-week internship. Through the use of learning plans, portfolios, and on-site meetings, TPC’s faculty advisors provide individualized guidance throughout the semester so each student receives the maximum benefit of participating in our program. With more than 800 placement opportunities, TPC offers an internship for almost any major.
As Hannah Szabo of Denison University said “My semester at TPC was incredibly wonderful and instructive (I would venture to say more instructive than an entire semester on-campus). It will sound cliche, but you really do find some kind of direction for your life, whether that direction is personal or professional. And, the faculty don’t lie—you will learn more about yourself during this semester than you ever thought possible (which is definitely a good thing!) I interned at two different publishing houses and found out that my career goal was right on the money—I definitely want to be a book editor! I loved copy editing and proofreading the manuscripts. I discovered a new found love and appreciation for the printed word. It also didn’t hurt that I got to sit around and read for eight hours a day (one of my favorite pastimes).”
